چکیده

We have studied the problem of generating expressive musical perfor mances in the context of tenor saxophone interpretations We have done several recordings of a tenor sax playing di erent Jazz ballads with di er ent degrees of expressiveness including an inexpressive interpretation of each ballad These recordings are analyzed using SMS spectral modeling techniques to extract information related to several expressive parame ters This set of parameters and the scores constitute the set of cases examples of a case based system From this set of cases the system infers a set of possible expressive transformations for a given new phrase applying similarity criteria based on background musical knowledge be tween this new phrase and the set of cases Finally SaxEx applies the inferred expressive transformations to the new phrase using the synthesis

Affect-Driven CBR to Generate Expressive Music

We present an extension of an existing system, called SaxEx, capable of generating expressive musical performances based on Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) techniques. The previous version of SaxEx did not take into account the possibility of using aaective labels to guide the CBR task. This paper discusses the introduction of such aaective knowledge to improve the retrieval capabilities of the syst...

JIG: Jazz Improvisation Generator

This article presents JIG, a system for improvisation on jazz ballads. It was described previously in a Master’s Thesis [4]. JIG generates so called ’formulaic’ improvisations. It uses constraints, in combination with probability-driven randomness to generate note-attributes. In this way, numerous different improvisations can be generated on a single song. JIG has been incorporated in SaxEx, a ...

AI and Music: From Composition to Expressive Performance

of computer music systems based on AI techniques: (1) compositional, (2) improvisational, and (3) performance systems. Representative examples of each type are briefly described. Then, we look in more detail at the problem of endowing the resulting performances with the expressiveness that characterizes human-generated music. This is one of the most challenging aspects of computer music that ha...

Emergent case-based reasoning applications

There are new Case-Based Reasoning applications that are starting to emerge and that deserve attention. Some representative ones are included in this section. A very representative emerging field is music. The first work that applied CBR to music is that of Arcos, Lopez de mantaras, and Serra, [1998] that won the Best Paper Award at the 1997 International Computer Music Conference. In this work...

Imitating Human Performances to Automatically Generate Expressive Jazz Ballads

One of the main problems with the automatic generation of expressive musical performances is that human performers use musical knowledge that is not explicitly noted in musical scores. Moreover, this knowledge is tacit, difficult to verbalize, and therefore it must be acquired through a process of observation, imitation, and experimentation. For this reason, AI approaches based on declarative k...
